Leonard Lopatin, a native of New York City, began playing the flute at the age of twelve and went on to study with Harold Bennett at the Manhattan School of Music. Later he studied with Arthur Lora at the Juilliard School, earning his Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance in May, 1976.

One month prior to graduation, he won the audition for
third flute and piccolo in the Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra, a position he held for three years.

Not satisfied that the flutemakers of the day
understood the problems of flute performance,
he left the Opera in 1979 and set out to learn
flutemaking with the goal of making his own
contribution to the improvement
of the flute.

He trained with one of the Boston area's top flute companies, where he worked for fifteen years, before founding Lopatin Flute Company in 1994. His extensive experience as a flutist and high skill as a flutemaker were now forged into one unified force.

While in Boston, Mr. Lopatin performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the Opera Company of Boston. He now resides in Asheville, North Carolina, and serves as Principal Flute in the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
